The Asus Z87 Intel motherboard (Sabertooth)

z87 Haswell motherboard

Sabertooth

Rise and shine! New processors means new motherboards and new motherboards means new styles! I actually think motherboard prices are getting cheaper because the motherboard I'm giving you a look at is pretty cheap for what it is.

This motherboard is produced by Asus (one of the most well known technological companies), it's socket LGA 1150 (Haswell), and it has a rather distinctive look to it, let me give you a picture.

Alright, I gave you three because I'm generous. With all the heat sinks, you wouldn't be able to tell that this thing handles electricity like a boss. Everything is covered in a black shroud, I don't know what you guys prefer, but I like seeing the guts of my motherboard, It let's me know that there are functioning parts of the computer. It also look really awesome in a case.

Features

So aside from having an insane heat sink structure, this motherboard looks like it should be priced at some ridiculous price. Well it's only $260, and that's pretty good. Let's see what 260 of your dollars would get you.

  • Obviously Thermal Armor
  • Japanese Capacitors
  • Real time Temperature detection and removal
This board is part of the TUF Series Therfore offering some pretty in-depth features such as.

  • newegg Total Airflow-Boosting Heat Dissipation.                                                               The shape of the armor on the board improves airflow, and the I/O cover fan also provides more cooling solution.
  • newegg We Got Your Back!                                                                                                     A blackplate will protect your board from bending if you have multiple graphics cards or one REALLY heavy graphics card. This is good if you're a super enthusiast or have really heavy heat sink for your CPU. Breaking circuitry is a big problem since heat sinks are getting heavier and this feature will protect users from that.
  • newegg Real-Time Temperature Detection and Heat Removal                                          With this feature you are able to completely monitor the temperatures of your motherboard, CPU, GPU, and on top of that, the actual zone those components are inhabiting. Additionally you get two assist fans that contribute to airflow in the case. The board is able to create a thermal map of your motherboard.
  • newegg Repel the Dust, Expand the Lifespan This feature I believe is a little overdone, but hey you're paying 260 dollars, so why not. For this feature your board comes with a fan filter for the back I/O fan. All exposed ports are covered to protect the component from dust.
  • newegg Certified for Tough Duty Get rugged performance —                                                 This is where Asus brags about the capacitors it picked out for this motherboard. They're using very high end japanese capacitors that were third party tested by the military. Trust me this is an absolute crucial part of a motherboard. Bad capacitors give poor performance and short useful life. You don't have to worry about that with the Asus Sabertooth
  • newegg Leading digital power control solution                                                                        The board controls electricity going through it very well and has very sophisticated voltage controllers on it. This is good for increasing efficiency as well as lifelong control.

Final Thoughts

So what do you get for that cash? A well thought out, decently engineered motherboard. Sure it's not a socket 2011 type insane monster, but you shouldn't expect that for something around 200. What you do get though, more than enough functionality to do your average users task, and more functionality to complete enthusiast gaming and what not.

This board is great, I myself am thinking about purchasing it. You should consider this board if you're looking for a high end machine but at the same time you don't feel the need to go over the top with the other 300-400 dollar boards. Another bonus is it's built by a reputable company which automatically makes it appealing to many fans.

It looks cool, it has a nice name, and all the functions plus more that anyone could need. You really do get high end components from this board which will dramatically increase overclocking stability and potential as well as life expectancy.
